The background
The problem of cancer is one of the most important health challenges the Polish healthcare system is facing currently. Every year, 160 000 people in Poland suffer from cancer and 100 000 dies because of it. Every day, 300 people in Poland are diagnosed with cancer, and 220 lose their lives as a result of this disease. This is primarily a result of low detectability, but also a 5-10% weaker results of treatment compared to the EU average. It is estimated, that in the next 20 years, the incidence of cancer may more than double. This shows that Poland must take all possible steps to tackle this challenge.
The National Oncological Strategy, as a new tool in the fight against cancer, will show the directions of changes in the organization of the oncological treatment system. The goal of the strategy is also a broad discussion about what else can be done in the area of cancer prevention. According to the WHO data, approximately 40% of cancer deaths can be prevented only through effective prevention.
The Medical Research Agency wants to become an active actor in the field of cancer prevention. This will be achieved through cooperation with domestic and foreign partners, including the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center – one of the best cancer treatment centers in the world.
We would like to invite all the concerned parties to a joint discussion on how to effectively build activities in the area of cancer prevention. The “Cancer Prevention 2020” conference will become a forum that will bring together national and international experts in a common effort of developing the best tools for Polish patients. Prominent specialists in this field from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, who will take part in the conference, will also share their knowledge in this area.
